{"id":8137,"date":"2023-06-09T16:43:45","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T20:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/?post_type=lsvr_notice&#038;p=8137"},"modified":"2024-09-11T15:51:08","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T19:51:08","slug":"potential-risk-for-resurgence-in-mpox-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/index.php\/potential-risk-for-resurgence-in-mpox-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Potential Risk for Resurgence in Mpox Cases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Potential Risk for Resurgence in Mpox Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mpox cases in Philadelphia peaked in July 2022, and have since decreased significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"588\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-05-30-at-2.44.28-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-05-30-at-2.44.28-PM.png 588w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-05-30-at-2.44.28-PM-480x287.png 480w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-05-30-at-2.44.28-PM-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the country, there have been sporadic mpox cases in 2023.<strong> Chicago, however, has experienced a resurgence of mpox cases between April and May 2023. <\/strong>\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>In May 2023, one mpox case was identified in Philadelphia after several months with no cases. <strong>More cases are expected to be identified in Philadelphia in the coming days and weeks. <\/strong>\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>&#8220;Since there was one reported case in May, [I suspect] that there were others that were subclinical or went undiagnosed,\u201d says Dr. Lenore Asbel, infectious disease expert at the Division of Disease Control. \u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>\u201cAs providers [and] the community were aware of the cases in Chicago, there [has been] a slight uptick in both providers offering and patients seeking vaccine. We are trying to be proactive as last year the increase coincided with Pride activities, travel, etc.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mpox Cases in Chicago<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the mpox cases reported in Chicago, all were among men who were symptomatic, and none of these patients were hospitalized. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>9 out of the 13 patients who are known to have had mpox in Chicago between April 17 and May 5 had received 2 JYNNEOS vaccine doses. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-06-09-at-3.38.30-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8138\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While patients who tested positive in Chicago were largely vaccinated, <strong>those who have been fully vaccinated are likely to <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/mpox\/your-health\/vaccines\/infections.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>develop milder symptoms<\/strong><\/a> than those who aren\u2019t vaccinated. They are also <strong>less likely to transmit the virus to others. <\/strong>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>There have been 20 additional mpox cases reported in Chicago since May 5.
