{"id":14178,"date":"2026-05-27T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/?p=14178"},"modified":"2026-05-27T13:58:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:58:13","slug":"varicella-daycare-outbreak-notice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/index.php\/varicella-daycare-outbreak-notice\/","title":{"rendered":"Varicella Daycare Outbreak Notice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Philadelphia Department of Health has recently identified a varicella (chickenpox) outbreak in a daycare located in ZIP code 19145 and is sharing clinical reminders on the diagnosis and management of varicella.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Varicella is a highly contagious disease that can be serious for non-immune pregnant people, newborns, and those with weak immune systems. If patients arrive at your office with rash, room them promptly and implement airborne plus contact precautions to avoid waiting room exposures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Clinical Features and Diagnosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Varicella disease presents as low-grade fever and a pruritic erythematous vesicular rash with up to 500 lesions in varying stages (see photo below). Immunized patients may develop milder and shorter disease course with modified rash showing less than 50 lesions and fewer to no vesicles. \u202f If you suspect varicella disease, send testing by unroofing a skin lesion and collecting lesion fluid\/material with a synthetic swab and placing it in viral transport media (VTM) to send for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. These are typically the same swabs used for respiratory viral testing (i.e., COVID-19\/influenza\/RSV). For instructions on lesion specimen collection, refer to\u202f<a><strong>this specimen collection guidance<\/strong><\/a>.\u202f Specimens should be sent to commercial labs. Refer to the following for test requirements and codes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a><strong>Quest<\/strong><\/a>: 34052\u202fVaricella-Zoster Virus DNA, Qualitative, Real-Time PCR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a><strong>Labcorp<\/strong><\/a>: 138313 Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), DNA PCR<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14179\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4992793575987737;width:523px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/varicella.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Infection Control and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Patients with suspected or confirmed varicella should be asked to stay home <\/strong>from school, daycare, and other activities until the rash scabs and no new lesions appear for at least 24 hours.\u202f <strong>Immediately notify the Philadelphia Department of Health of any suspected cases<\/strong> by calling <a><strong>(215) 685-6741<\/strong><\/a> during business hours (M-F, 8:30 a.m.\u20135 p.m.). After hours, call <a><strong>(215) 685-6748<\/strong><\/a> and leave a voicemail with information on the suspected case. Do not wait for test results to call.\u202f Continue to offer age-appropriate routine varicella vaccination to all eligible patients and conduct recall of patients delayed on their immunizations for catch-up vaccination. Post-exposure varicella vaccination within 3-5 days may prevent or modify disease.
