{"id":11083,"date":"2024-03-26T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/?post_type=lsvr_notice&#038;p=8857"},"modified":"2025-02-11T18:28:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T23:28:29","slug":"protect-children-against-travel-associated-infections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/index.php\/protect-children-against-travel-associated-infections\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect\u00a0Children Against Travel-Associated Infections\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Protect&nbsp;Children Against Travel-Associated Infections<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This blog post was written alongside Dr. Mayssa Abuali, who has served the Philadelphia pediatric community for the past 10 years<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several measles outbreaks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/global-measles-vaccination\/data-research\/global-measles-outbreaks\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/globalhealth\/measles\/data\/global-measles-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internationally<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">58 measles cases<\/a> have been reported across 17 jurisdictions the United States in 2024.\u00a0<strong>93% of US cases were linked to international travel.<\/strong> Most cases occurred among unvaccinated individuals. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the summer season and international travel near, pediatric healthcare providers should ensure children are current on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/schedules\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">routine immunizations<\/a>, including MMR and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other vaccines<\/a> that protect against travel-associated infections.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prior to international travel<\/strong><strong>, CDC recommends:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infants 6 months of age or older receive their first MMR vaccine at least two weeks prior to departure.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children aged 12 months and older&nbsp;should receive their second dose prior&nbsp;to travel, and at least 28 days after the first dose. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At this time, the CDC does not recommend early doses of MMR for domestic U.S. travel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In addition to measles vaccination, providers should also offer: <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Early hepatitis A vaccine to infants of 6 months of age or older traveling to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2024\/infections-diseases\/hepatitis-a#map506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endemic areas<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/hcp\/recommendations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meningitis<\/a> vaccine to travelers heading to Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca or to the meningitis belt in sub-saharan Africa. The available conjugate ACWY vaccines include: &nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MenQuadfi is approved for use in individuals&nbsp;2 years of age and older.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Menveo is approved for use in individuals ages 2 months&nbsp;and older. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2024\/infections-diseases\/typhoid-and-paratyphoid-fever#prevent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Typhoid<\/a> vaccine if traveling to an endemic area (i.e., Africa, Latin America, Asia). Typhoid vaccines are only available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/services\/mental-physical-health\/get-vaccinated\/get-travel-vaccinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">travel clinics<\/a>.
