Presently, seasonal flu activity is elevated across the country. Ensure your practice is prepared to fight flu this winter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><br><br><strong>Remind patients to get vaccinated. <\/strong>Send email, text, or phone call reminders to patients to get vaccinated against flu this season. CDC developed an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/vaccination\/prepare-practice-tools.htm#anchor_1566404641\" target=\"_blank\">appointment reminder email template<\/a> which you can customize for your practice and patient population.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Make a strong vaccine recommendation. <\/strong>Offer flu vaccine and share specific reasons why the flu vaccine is right for the patient.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><li>Young children: \u201cYoung children, even those who are healthy, are at high risk of serious flu-related complications. Flu vaccination can <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/139\/5\/e20164244\/38814\/Influenza-Vaccine-Effectiveness-Against-Pediatric?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce the risk<\/a> of flu-associated death by 65% (nearly two-thirds) among healthy children.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>Pregnant people: \u201cPregnant people are at high risk of severe flu illness due to changes in the body caused by pregnancy. Complications of the flu can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2018\/10\/assessment-and-treatment-of-pregnant-women-with-suspected-or-confirmed-influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a> preterm delivery, pneumonia, and material and fetal death. The flu vaccine is safe and recommended during pregnancy and can also protect your baby for several months after birth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>Adults 65 years and older: \u201cPeople who are 65 years and older are at high risk of serious complications due to flu. Most flu-related hospitalizations and deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><li>Adults with certain medical conditions: \u201cPeople with certain chronic conditions, like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease, are at high risk of serious complications from flu. These include inflammation of the heart, brain, or muscle tissue\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>Healthy adults: \u201cMost healthy adults don&#8217;t die from the flu, but your rate of hospitalization can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7143a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cut nearly in half<\/a> by getting the flu shot.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Discuss practical matters with patients. There are costs to skipping vaccinations, such as the flu shot:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><li>If patients get the flu, they may miss several days of work which can result in lost wages.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Patients who are hospitalized due to the flu can face expensive medical bills.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">When discussing the costs of declining vaccination, remember to <strong>acknowledge patient concerns<\/strong>. This is particularly important for marginalized patients who have experienced discrimination in medical settings. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Black, Latinx, and indigenous patients experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/flu-inequities\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher rates of severe flu<\/a> than white patients. Taking the time to<strong> engage with patients in decision making<\/strong> can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annfammed.org\/content\/18\/5\/422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve health outcomes<\/a>, particularly among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7786733\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable patients<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Continue the conversation. <\/strong>If patients remain hesitant to receive the flu vaccine after counseling, offer educational materials. CDC has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/professionals\/vaccination\/prepare-practice-tools.htm#anchor_1566404605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">informational handouts<\/a> which you can use at no cost to your practice.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Additionally, this <a href=\"https:\/\/vaccines.phila.gov\/index.php\/flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flu Toolkit<\/a> is available for health care providers in Philadelphia.
